Teacher salaries in England are set by the School Teachers' Pay and Conditions Document. The Main Pay Scale (MPS) runs from £31,650 to £43,607 outside London. The Upper Pay Scale (UPS) adds a further tier up to £49,084. Leadership pay extends significantly higher. Critically for budget planning: state school teachers belong to the Teachers' Pension Scheme, where employer contributions are approximately 28.6% of salary — far above the auto-enrolment 3% minimum. At a £42,000 MPS salary, the pension contribution alone adds approximately £12,012 per year to the employer cost.
